Key Stage	Information
Key Stage 3	Year 7: 3 hours per fortnight on a carousel system covering all areas of Design Technology Year 8: 2 hours per fortnight – two terms of food, one term Textiles 2 hours per fortnight – Design & Technology Year 9: 1 hour per fortnight- Food throughout the year 2 hours per fortnight – Design & Technology
Key Stage 4	GCSE Design & Technology (AQA) GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition (AQA) CAMBRIDGE NATIONAL Child Development (OCR) 5 hours per fortnight
Key Stage 5	A Level Design & Technology: Product Design (AQA) 9 hours per fortnight in Y12 and 9 hours per fortnight in Y13

Subject Information

The Faculty of Design and Technology aims to ensure that our pupils:

Develop technical, practical and creative skills needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

Build and apply a repertoire of skills, knowledge and understanding in order to design, make and appreciate high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.

Evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Understand that these are transferable, problem solving skills that can build resilience when faced with challenges in future careers or in their personal life.

Apply specific skills from other subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computing and Art to support learning and to produce successful prototypes.

Read information carefully to ensure they can more independently attempt stages of manufacture / methods of making as well as writing their own instructions and evaluation notes.

Engage with further reading and independent research to better understand how products function and how the design and manufacture of products can have positive or negative impacts on the environment, communities or individuals from different backgrounds.

The Cambridge National in Child Development will prepare students for further qualifications in Child Care, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology and Biology. Pupils will have a sound knowledge of key topics and practise key research and evaluation skills in their centre assessed units.

Additional Information

Extracurricular programme

Support and access to resources is provided for pupils wishing to develop their work at KS4 and KS5 at lunchtimes and afterschool.

Seasonal baking competitions, at Christmas and Easter we offer after school activities for pupils to develop their creative flair and design skills by designing and making seasonal, decorated cakes.
Drop-in sessions to develop CAD/CAM skills for 3d printing, laser cutting and heat sublimation printing.
Food ingredients– We take great pride in the practical lessons we offer at Range High School throughout KS3 and KS4. Pupils are expected to access class charts and/or Google Classroom for ingredients which should be weighed at home ready for the lesson.
Aprons for both Food and D&T lessons can be purchased at reception as part of the school uniform policy.
