Subject Information

Religious Education is a principal part of our school curriculum.  It is our intention to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions.   In Religious Education we aim to develop well-rounded individuals who can make a positive contribution to society whilst considering their own opinions on the ultimate meaning of life.   The teaching of RE makes links between the beliefs, practices and value systems of a range of religious and non-religious world views, with the aim of developing responsibility and respect for all aspects of diversity, whether it be social, cultural and religious, preparing pupils well for life in modern Britain.  We encourage pupils to develop their own sense of morality, empathy, compassion, respect and an awareness of national and global current issues. Pupils are given the opportunity for discussion and debate, whereby they offer their viewpoint on ethical and moral issues, as well as respecting and understanding why others have a different opinion.

Parents may request to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education (RE). Please put your request in writing to the headteacher.

  • Employers hold the study of Religious Education in high regard.  Religious Education is a subject which is useful in a variety of careers: law, police, armed forces, travel, advertising, human resources, diplomacy, publishing, journalism, the media, caring professions and teaching.
  • Many famous works of art are studied in RE including Michael Angelo’s The Creation of Adam, The Last Judgement, The Last Supper amongst others.  Pupils are also introduced to spectacular religious buildings around the world from Buddhist Temples in the Far East to the Masjid Al Haram in Mecca.  When studying Pilgrimage, pupils learn and watch documentaries about places of religious significance, for example Mecca, Lourdes, Jerusalem and Varanasi.
