Subject Information

Our main aim is to encourage all students to develop a positive attitude to mathematics, including confidence, enjoyment, resilience and perseverance. We want all students to use mathematics confidently across the curriculum and to develop their potential fully. They must be encouraged to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to apply a range of mathematical concepts to situations which may arise in their own lives. They need to appreciate the place of mathematics in society, including historical and cultural influences.

The curriculum intent is to provide stretch and challenge across all attainment bands and all key stages.

Additional Information

• Puzzle Club is held at lunchtime, one day each week. All students are welcome to come along and try the various puzzles on offer such as Rubik’s cubes, Kaleidoscope, 3D Connect 4, Chess, Battleships, Sudoku and many more!
• UKMT Maths Challenges – every year we have pupils who enter the competitions at all levels: Junior, Intermediate and Senior. The problems are very challenging and designed to make students think as well as encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency.
• The Number Buddy scheme has been running for approximately 19 years. The programme was set up by the Maths department to encourage sixth formers to get involved in supporting KS3 students in lessons. Over the years, sixth formers have gained valuable experience to help them complete enrichment, Duke of Edinburgh and UCAS. Some of our students have even continued into teaching following on from their participation in the Number Buddy programme.
• Courses are promoted to students who are preparing to take the next step and go to university such as Problem Solving and STEP/AEA Preparation Day.
• Number Day is celebrated each year to raise money for the NSPCC with a raffle taking place. Students have taken part in many different activities such as ‘Who wants to be a Mathionnaire?’, a Times Tables Rockstar competition and solving anagrams in tutor time to see how maths is applied in a variety of careers.
• Maths equipment – students are expected to have the correct equipment for each lesson which should include a scientific calculator.
